    New with Questions

Hello. Just joined up and have read posts, but bewildering in my choices. I order a lot from Cabelas and find a number of metal dectectors there: 1. most are Bounty Hunter 2. some are Fisher 3. then there are a few labeled as Cabelas by Bounty Hunter. My question: if you had to choose one or two brands/models, which would you choose for a brand new beginner? Could I get one for, say, $125-$250 that is very good? Also, ease of use and simplicity would also be very important for me. I'm a technophobe essentially, and is right out of the box ready to use a possibility? Thanks! Kim

First, welcome to the site...there is a lot of great information here...

Now, as for your detector...Firstly, I would skip Cabelas and go with a reputable metal detector dealer. 4-H (info@allaroundashevillenc.com ) is one of the guys on T-Net that has great customer satisfaction, there are others as well...You will get better prices and service here !!

We really need to know what type of MDing you plan on doing to give you a better idea of the unit we should prescribe....beaches(fresh or salt), parks/playgrounds, old fields. Are you looking for coins or old relics(civil war & the like)

That being said, if you are strictly on a price point...I would say the two most recommended units for beginners are the Garrett Ace 250 and the Tesoro Silver Umax. Both of these are great beginner machines and are of quality manufacturer. The Ace has target ID which gives you an idea of what you may be digging(coin/iron/etc), while the Tesoro Umax is a sound only machine. I personally prefer the Tesoros for several reasons. One is that you you will not be misled by the ID feature(sometimes a gold ring will ID as junk!!), Second, Tesoro has a full lifetime warranty and is super on warranty work, the Tesoro is super lightweight and, in this price range, is a really deep searching unit. Also, the Umax is a turn & go unit..not many things to learn.

Let us know some more specifics of what you wish to hunt for and maybe we can give you more info...Im sure you will get plenty of advice.

Hi Kim and welcome aboard TreasureNet!

Try the link to Kellyco at the top of this page. They are a metal detector super store and they carry just about every brand of detector on the market, and will provide a wealth of information for every kind of detecting. I use a Minelab Excalibur 1000 for my underwater detecting, and have been shopping at Kellyco for many years.

    Welcome to Tnet Kim.

As for detectors you can't go wrong with the Tesoro brand for a starter detector as they also have a lifetime warranty if you ever need it. Kellyco can not sell them that is how special they are. If you have a local dealer near you I advise you to visit the store where you can feel the various detectors and you get to take it home with you. This saves UPS from throwing it around or delivering it to the wrong address. No matter where you price them the costs are within a couple pennies from each other.

Many here have bought from a dealer called 4-H. http://www.allaroundashevillenc.com/...etectors.shtml Mike is a fine dealer and will not sell you the wrong detector just to make a sale.
