Anyone using the Platinum?

I see they are one sale for $300 with extras. It resembles the Tek Gamma 6000. If any of you are using one I sure would like to know hear how you like it.

I ordered one today Kurt----My only concern was the 8th inch headphone jack so I also ordered this adapter. I hope to fasten it to the housing to avoid stress on the small jack.

Good idea on the headphone adapter. Let us know how you like the detector. It sure seems like a lot of bang for the buck.

I just got one from Detector Electronics Corp. in Southborough, MA. (metaldetector.com) It came with a case and headphones as well as a nice pair of gloves, an apron and two treasure bags, a wet and a dry one. There was also a treasure visor for the car. I live in new Hampshire and received it the next day using their free UPS ground shipping option so they must have hustled it right out the door for me. I bought it through their eBay store, detectorelectronics because eBay gave me a 10% coupon which brought the price down to $269.95. I haven't got out with it yet but performing the BH tests given in the owners manual shows about 4"-6" more free air depth than my BH Landstar. It has the Teknetics 6000 screen and coil adapted to the sweet Teknetics 8000 handle and it is very light, one of the lightest detectors available. It uses only one 9V battery and BH claims that it will last as long as the two in the Landstar. I don't have a problem with the 1/8 Th inch headphone jack as I like to use lightweight headphones from an old walkman. I like to hunt old Indian and settler sites in the Pisgah wilderness near my home and need to keep an ear open for wildlife as there are coyotes, wolves and bears out there. I keep an antique Colt Frontier Scout in a holster on my belt as well as a couple of good knives just in case. I use the landstar in All Metals Mode and it works well at finding deep relics and bottles that are buried along with old iron. The detector came with BH's Premium headphones but I haven't used them yet. The detector also has a volume control function which is also good for me as I don't always want to use headphones. I researched this machine for a while and found it to be a no brainer. It has the performance of the Teknetics 8000 at a much lower cost minus a few features of course. Most notably, the great coil used on the 8000 which can be used on the Platinum but the platinum is tuned to give the best performance with the 8: that it comes with. I'm not sure about the coil swapping thing, it hasn't seemed to work so well for others. I believe that it could be done with proper tuning of the electronics but that remains to be seen and for now, I am very happy with the Platinum just as it is. At he price DE is selling it for, it truly is a no brainer. I got it because I plan on heading out on some beaches to hunt jewelry and I understand that the Platinum is very stable in salt with proper adjustment. I'm a woods man but If I like beach hunting, I will get a pulse type for the deep water later on this year but I plan on using the Platinum in the surf and shallow water from Maine to Florida all year long to give it a good try (I'm retired).

I got the Platinum last week and tested it in my coin garden.
It is no deeper than my Time Ranger and less user friendly IMO.
I sent it back to detectorelectronics to exchange it for a Teknetics Delta 4000.
I will post my Delta test results.

I own a BH Platinum, but I don’t have very much experience (I am a beginner).
For a long time, I compared the Gamma 6000 with the Platinum. I bought the platinum because the low price at 300 dollars. I would like to know a bit more about treasure hunting, before spending 700 dollars (or more) for my new hobby. The platinum is exceptionally easy to use and lightweight, just a bit over 2 lb. I feel like this is a perfect machine at an affordable price for a beginner like me.

Gamma and BH platinum are very similar, still - there are a few variations in the software:
The platinum has a automatic GROUND BALANCING procedure, simply push the ground-grab button while holding the coil about 2 inches above ground. The display shows temporarily the mineralization up to 99. This display will change to the target identification once you go back in the discrimination mode.

The gamma displays additional (on the left top of the screen) 4 soil conditions, ‘very low’ – ‘low’ – ‘moderate’ and ‘high’ mineralization.
Also, the gamma has a additional manual ground balancing feature.

The sensitivity adjustment on the platinum is 4 to 9. The gamma adjustment is 40 to 99, you can better fine-tune it.

There is ONE more big difference between the two MD’s: The gamma has a screw-on female 6-pin plug on the coil wire. The platinum has a 6-pin male push-on plug – no way to exchange the coils! They can be exchanged within the “Greek” series like gamma, omega or G2.

How deep is the platinum going?
I’ve been hunting the forums for a MD with the deepest discover ability.
It’s a question of the coil you’re using and the soil where you hunting. It’s a question of the software on your MD.
My BH platinum will detect a quarter at about 7 inches, in “my soil” under “ my conditions” (wet, mineralization etc.)
I am more interested in target identification. But then again – gold, pull-tabs and screw-caps give often the same signal.
The only thing I need now is more experience, with a good quality MD.
I went out again today to the old farm house, together with a friend and my wife. We got a few more artifacts (iron). But I do now understand friends who say “learning your MD is as much important than the brand you use.”
I begin to comprehend MY MD, recognize the sound and display.

I would buy this MD again right now, it’s worth every dollar.
