Really old wood box meed info on it

I got this box at a tag sale the people knew nothing about it I noticed it was really detailed carved by hand and notched together not built with nails if any one could tell me about this I would love to know it has a brass lock plate on it but its like no lock I seen before it also has maker marks on the lock plate here are some pics of it. I also believe it was on a ship of some kind. That's all I know. Would like to know what kind of wood it may be and how old where it may be from what it is for etc.

One way of checking is the hinge screws.Take a couple out.Check to see whether they were hand made and not machine made.Of course they could of been replaced at some time or another.

You've bought a beautiful, decorative, functional piece that you like and appreciate the carving on the panels! This box would look even better if it was wiped down with a damp cloth, allowed to dry, and was then lightly oiled with an 'Orange Oil' to help moisturize the wood.

Unfortunately though, this box is not very old (30 - 50 years) and was likely made in either Thailand or China as a 'decorator piece'. It looks to have been carved in Teak wood. Chests like these were made in enormous quantities for export to the American and English markets. Popular souvenirs after World War II, many of them are still in use throughout the United States because they are beautiful and useful for storage.

    Hope this helps,
    Dave

I agree with Antiquarian, the carving is low quality and it looks like a tourist grade or export piece. Similar ones are still available in the east.

I don't see Indian, I see South East Asian.
I can't say that I've ever seen India try to replicate Asian before.

Of course, if you're of Thia ancestry you would know better I.
