Hey Zeke, I know you posted this a this a long time ago ,but i was wondering if you ever found out anything else about your Carolina Special button?? The reason Im asking is because I found the exact same thing during the summer of this year, I also live in North Carolina . I had no idea what it was so i googled it and your post popped up. I'm just wondering if you ever found out exactly what it is? :)

Pretty sure above response is correct. Early tobacco salesman button to promote their product. My guess would be very lay 1800's but more than likely early 1900's

FWIW, "Carolina Special" was also the name of a Southern Railway train that operated 1911-1968.

Southern Railway buttons were typically round (brass) with "SR" or "Southern" on the obverse.

IDK if there might (or not) have been special buttons, cufflinks, lapel/hat pins for that special train.
