Buttons!

Yea raining here today and not much to do so decided to work on my buttons today mainly the pewter ones as I've been needing to urethane them.Why let history crumble away right!

Anyway getting ready to make me a display for them all so as I had them out figured I take some shots of the types I find here.Back to work tomorrow!

Some of the buttons with a question mark beside them look like they are concave. If they are and they have a silver looking ring around the front edge they are probably backs to early 2 piece buttons that had a face sweated on. Most of the faces to these I've seen are plain and either flat or low convex

Thanks vayank54,here are some better pics. of the one with marks beside them. The one still had material in the shank left.Thought it was kinda neat as it is purdy old I'm sure from where it came from.

Of the buttons in your hand the bottom 2 look like they could be backs of 2 piece buttons and the 2 above them are for sure. Notice how the edge of the front is flat? That is so the face could be soldered on. Also you can see the end of the shank sticking through. I checked to make sure and these buttons were evidently made from the mid to late 1700's. Some have been dug in rev war camps. I've never found a lot of those and am not sure what they are called. There is another type of 2 piece button from the mid to late 1700's called expansion buttons. These have 2 holes in the back so the gases could escape when the face was soldered on. The button with the thread is cool. That type is called a pierced button. I've not found a lot of those either.

Funny how you speak about the Rev war as these were found with Rev War buttons also.The two disk shape ones were too.

You're welcome. I was thinking they didn't make those 2 piece buttons until the late 1700's but decided I had better check. In the front of Tice's book it has some that were dug in rev war camps. I checked out the other post and you have done well. I love that early stuff.

Buttons can be tricky it looks to me like there vanyank.I noticed some that look very close size shape and all that go back to the 15th century!Just one i found looking at the site Uk finds medeval buttons.One of those ones in my hand were talking about is 15mm.And here is two very simular one 15mm one 19mm but 15th century.Not saying mine is but boy they can be hard to determine.Also another one I had with my drilled eyes has me wondering now.
