Can anyone give an approximate date for this button?

I found this old flat button - it is in bad shape as you can see. I am interested because I found it near the site of a British fort that existed in the 1820s. Can anyone tell from the style of the button whether it could be that old? The ring on the back is broken off but you can see how it was attached. If there was anything on the front, it is corroded away. It would be cool if it was that old because it would be about the oldest metal thing that you could find in my area.

I,m no expert and someone correct me if I,m wrong , but it looks to me to be a colonial flat button or a tombac button which would date it to the mid 1700's to early 1800's . I've found quite a few buttons like yours here in southeastern Va. except mine aren't quite that corroded .
