Thanks devldog. Yes, I dug this a few days ago in Warwick, RI. It did clean up very nicely. I don't find many buttons here in Rhode Island but got lucky enough to find this and another Rhode Island button a few months ago when my sister gave me permission to search her property near Coventry, RI. I believe the one from my sister's property is a civil war coat button and this most recent find appears to be a cuff button as it's much smaller. I've also dug a few civilian buttons recently including a tombac, silver plated, flower design and sunburst design.

I did some more research and believe I have identified this button. I believe it is a 1880's Rhode island state militia brass button.
