Found this button in a canyon alongside a stream in the mountains. Can anyone please identify an approximate time period by the style of shank?

Hard to say. Is there any writing on the back mark? Look for words like High, Gold, Color or Colour. Here’s a guide I found on here at one time. Has helped some

Thanks for your help WV, there’s no writing on the back and those images you sent me might help in the future but unfortunately the shank on this button doesn’t match any of them.
