Found this in an antique store. They sold it to me as a "rock". I don't know if you can tell by the photo but it is a fossilized molar.
In Colorado it is illegal to collect vertebrate fossils. We have found some really nice plant fossils in some of the shale deposits in the area.

Here in NY, a town called montgomery has a full time archaeologist. When Interstate 84 was put in, it went right through montgomery. The DOT had to halt construction each time that remains were unearthed. It got to the point where the crews would find things and toss them in the woods before anyone could find out. Many fossils, tracks, and remains were found, including a complete mastidon.
