How Would You Deal With This?

A few years ago I had a death in my family and ended up with some sliver coins, mainly recent stuff from the 1940's on. I'm trying to decide what is the best way to sort out and record what's in the collection. I know there are some Liberty silver Dollars and halfs but the main part is made up of lots and lots of dimes and quarters. I'm not interested in getting rid of it, just figuring out what is there and what it might be worth. I'd rather not have it appraised at a coin dealer because I don't want to drag that much silver around. Is there a easy way to do it or should I get a lunch tray to work off of and just dig in?

I'l, post some pictures of the stash, it weighs about 35 lbs and is a almost full 30 caliber ammo box. Did I say lots of quarters and dimes?. Looks like there might be a better detector in my future.

I'd start out quick and dirty, weigh it and calculate its melt value. Then I'd go through a little at a time looking for key dates or uncirculated coins that would have a little more value. Price guides and ebay should give a rough idea of coin values.

After you search out whatever key dates there may be.... You could figure the rest at about 10 times face! It will go up & down from there depending on what silver is at!

Thanks, i just gave it a quick going thru and found a little real old stuff. I've identifed two roman coins, a 1513 napoleon and a French silver Teston. Also have a copper coin or something with a six pointed jewish star minted into it. Think it was from Europe, 19th century or earlier. Looks like I need to sort and then figure what is there. It's one heck of a family cache, even found some Russian coins mixed in. Got 15 or 20 Canadian quarters, coins from Russia, Bolivia, France, Australia and England, it's a little of everything mixed in. Can't help but wonder if a lot of the coins in the collection came from my dad being in the military during WW2. I'm heading out of town for a week but will give an update and pictures after I get some sorting done. It's a bigger cache than I thought and will take some time to work thru.

Don't use a redbook. They are retail values and are usually too high. They are almost always off. Go to a coin dealer and pick up a grey sheet. That gives you the mostly recent prices because it comes out weekly. Redbook comes out once a year. Greysheet > Redbook. Hope that helps!
