On the trail of a cache..equipment recommendation?

Hopefully there really is a pot of something at the end of this rainbow! It seems that in order to find it I'll need to be able to detect about a foot to two feet, and the object in question will be a pot of unknown size. I'm thinking two-box, but I AM a noob, so any recommendations? Soil type is red, sandy, west Texas type ground..

Two box or a large coil should do the trick. I use a 15" coil. I guess you already know to hunt in all metal mode (no discrimination), and dig every signal, no matter how faint.

Have you been able to narrow your search area to a reasonably small area?

No, not yet.. I have a ton of work to do before I get to even swing a detector! I'm just wanting to be prepared if/when my chance comes. I had a stroke of luck recently that will allow me to be in the general area where I know it should be. However, it's gonna take multiple trips and more research before I'll have any confidence at all as to where to start swinging. Admittedly, things are pretty thin right now but I'm counting on luck and persistence to make up the difference!

I will! Right now I've decided I need to maps of the county from the turn of the century (1900 LOL!) that show each farm. Not sure that's even available-I haven't checked yet! The access I have will get me in the area, and a foot in the door because I know a landowner who knows other landowners, etc. Seems you can never have too many friends when it comes to getting access to places!

If you can get access via university library or other, historic Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps are very detailed and fit the time era you need.

I like my Garrett Master Hunter with the two-coil attachment. You get the two-coil and an excellent regular detector for the same price. A pleasant surprise is that it pinpoints reasonably well under the front coil.

Don't forget to make a probe from 1/4 inch or so steel rod with a t-handle. The two-coiler will go way below the length of most probes.
