Interesting, but illogical.

Why not hire another helicopter pilot to fly him around 'till they find the right canyon? Do it on spec.- they split any recovery. The prospect of $160,000 cash and 40 lbs of gold should buy lots of flight time.

That's kind of what I was thinking. Didn't really know what to make of the story - sounded a little odd to me.
