Modern Hidey-Hole..... Where Will You Look?

We all know about the ole Post Hole Banks, Cellar and Garden Spots, etc. Well, I just discovered a modern hiding place, and think it might be beneficial to the membership if we have a post dedicated to some of the more modern places people might stash stuff. I'll start it off with my discovery:

I purchased a used computer from our local swap-meet vendor a year ago. The brand was the same as my son's computer, and his video card took a dump. We swapped-out the video card and stuck the old computer in storage for further parts (if needed). A few weeks ago, I was going thru storage trying to decide what to sell and what to toss-out. I grabbed the old computer with the intent of removing and saving the memory, power supply, cpu and drives.

Later, as I was giving the old computer a once-over, I saw that one of the hard drives was disconnected from the power and IDE cables. I removed the hard drive, and noticed that the cover had been "opened", because several screws were missing. I grabbed my precision torx driver set and proceeded to open the drive. Inside I found it stuffed with cotton. As I removed the cotton, I found some nice "stuff". The first picture is how the drive looked when I first pulled it from the computer. The second picture is how the drive looked with the goodies. (The second picture is a "staged" shot with my own property- I may post a shot of the actual contents at a later date.)

    TAG! You're it!

I always look through the pages of books at thrift stores and yard sales. More then once I have found money between the pages.

Inside the computer would be the last place I would hide something. The computer is one of the first things the burglar takes. I will certainly start checking the ones I acquire though.

We were staying in a hotel this weekend and went out to see a Classic Car Show, Cristina said that she had hidden her diamond ring in her feminine surfboard box...

Told her that this is one of the first places a burglar looks...

So she bunched up some panty hose and hid the ring in them...

So if I was on the lookout, I'd look under sinks or in medicine cabinets, linen closets under sheets or towels, in the frig veggie drawer, butter dishes, under or behind dresser and cabinet drawers...

Whenever you're travelling around and stay at motels / hotels; check the room for things left behind by other travellers. Experienced housekeepers always check the rooms they clean after the people move on. But, they may not have the time to check ALL of possible hidy holes.

You never know what you might find under the bed in a hotel.

stuff left in desk drawers and closets & under beds aslo between the bed top and bottom matteress are common traveler places to put things --- power outlet boxes as well --undo the front stash jewelry and such there.

Re: Modern Hidey-Hole..... Where Will You Look?

I've thought about this quite a bit. There are literally thousands of places to hide things in my house or in public. However, a good hiding place has the following attributes:

    1) A robber won't think to look there or won't have the time to search enough to find it.
    2) The police won't think to look there and the police dogs won't pick up the scent.
    3) Your wife or kids won't throw it away accidentally.
    4) If you die, someone should eventually happen across it.

#4 really rules out a lot of places. I'd NEVER hide stuff in a computer. Burglars, cops, kids, and just about everyone else is going to take the computer first. And once you are gone and it stops working your wife is going to just throw it away.

I'd never thought to check out hotel rooms for valuables that were left behind. I guess it makes sense.

speaking of hotels.... check under the mattress. Remove the dresser drawers and look for anything stashed beneath them or taped to the bottom. and always get up early and go for a walk in the parking lot to check between the parked cars for money lying on the ground

My husband and I stayed in a hotel on a motorcycle trip we took to Yellowstone. The dresser drawer was sticking out and I hit my leg on it. It wasn't in the tracks right so I pulled it out to fix it. On the floor under it was 2 dvd's of the porn variety.

When Hoteling or Moteling it, I always flip through the Gideons bible, pull the bottom drawers of the nightstands & dressers & chack to see if the mirrors & artwork are hung or screwed to the walls.

If you get bored at a motel try detecting the gravel or grass strip between the parking spaces & the rooms. Amazing what gets dropped by people going from their cars to the rooms

Other places that've been good for me.
bathroom - toilet tanks, wall behind bathroom cabinets (be careful here razor blades dumped down the slots)
    any electrical receptacle.

Speaker boxes & most any piece of old stereo equipment.

There are several books out there with titles like "How to build a stash/hinding place" Amazing the ideas you can get from them. (Google Paladin Press).

I know it's here, just need a bigger coil!
