    found cache and lost it

    Hi guys,
I just found this site and love it. Anyway I just wanted to pass along a SAD storey from my youth. In 1967 I was 7 years old and lived in a house built by my great uncle in the 1910-20 era. He was the founder of the fiirst bank in town (Spokane Wash) and was quite wealthy before the stock market crash.
Anyway one day me and my brother were in the basement playing when I found a small tin box tucked in the rafters and inside we found old papers and 2 $10,000 bills, well we ran upstairs to show our dad he sat down and was going through the papers which were stock certificates but we were more interested in the money, he gave them to us and said they were play money that there was no such thing as a $10,000 bill and asked us if there was ever a president named Chase, I didnt know but being 7 years old believed my dad (who wouldnt). So my brother and I took our bills and showed our freinds, played with them until the neatness wore out and they were more than likely thrown away at some point. Fast forward to 3 months ago I was watching some Denzel Washington movie and in it were $10,000 bills, well that brought back the memory of our find so I googled the bill and in a matter of minutes was looking at a pitchure of the bill and I find out that Salmon P. Chase was the Secretary of Treasury and one of only 3 non presidents to be on currency. Were the bills real? I called my mother she didnt remember the bills but did remember the stock certificates which were real and worth enough $ for my dad to open a new garage put a down payment on the new house at the time. Unfortunately the house was tore down in the 70s to build an apt complex so who knows what else my great uncle had hid there. I WISH MY DAD (RIP) didnt know the presidents so well.

Yes at one time there were $10,000 bills with Chase on them.

Sounds plausible since he was a banker, although a bit ironic since you'd think he'd trust in his own bank?

MSgtUSAF, You could be onto something! Means you know the name of your great uncle, I think it would be worth your time to check out his will, and see if maybe there wasn't much cash passed on?
It might be that you'll want to do your best to get back to the house and coin shoot the back yard, in and outside the out buildings. Also look the inside of the house if you still can. Might be he planted a few jars around the place, like the garden or flower beds. His will may tell you if he owned any other property, like a cabin along a lake. Ect. You owe it to yourself to look into things some. But keep it to yourself. The extended family dont need to know anything, for if you get lucky they may fell it should belong to them and may even take you to court over it. GOOD LUCK

Davidtn, I wish they had internet back in the day, who knows what the outcome would of been. As to why he had them hid is anyones guess but I now believe they were real but only god and Uncle Perry knows for sure.

Monk, Unfortunately the house was bulldozed in the 70s, I wish I knew then what I knew now because the garage was full of old blue and green bottles and other (sadles, bridals horseshoes) stuff that I would love to have now. There was even a 30 something Packard in it which was sent to the junkyard. When he died the house went to my Grandmother and then to my mother, an Uncle got the building the bank was in, its a resturant today. The property (the whole city block) is now completly covered by Apts or parking lot.

Re: found cache and lost it

Msgt! So the house is gone! However if you have access to the property the house stood on? Take a good M/D to it and check it over. Who can say what might yet be in the ground? And if nothing else you might set it up to bring some close by Forum members to the lot and work it on half share. Still check out your great uncles Will, there may be a lead there? HAVE FUN!

Monk, I am stationed in Tucson Az and the house was in Spokane Wash so I wont be able to do any searching until after I retire (in 8 months) and move back to spokane. If any members are in the Spokane area I wonder if they have searched the area where Emerson Elementary school use to be?

Trust a bank in the 1920s? Maybe he knew what was about to happen and got some "insurance." Then he waited til it blew over, but died before he could use the stash.
