Looking for leads in Maine...where to look?
Ok,
I'm new to this well at least after 15 years...more of a born again metal detectorist. In any case, I have always been interested is caches. I know all about the big ones like Baron Castine and the ones out Machias way. I feel the problem with the east coast is the find, don't report with so many houses and development both have probably already been found.
I have a treasure atlas, but a one liner is kind of hard to go by. One that intrigues me is the story of the rum runners that stashed their stuff in the vicinity of Lead mountain. OK, who were these guys, time, weather...so many variables. In any case.....where can I find leads?

The best leads come from personal stories. That means you need to talk to people. Older people will sometimes open up to you when you mention the fact that people once hid, or buried their money/valuables. Think about it like this. How many caches have been found that no one knew about, until it was accidentally uncovered? But there was a time when someone did know about them. The story died when those people died. There are old people alive today that know of, or at least have heard of, cache stories. If we don't find them out, that knowledge will die with them.
Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish: for I work a work in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you. Acts 13:41

Remember, caches can be as little as a couple of years old. I am sure that given the present state of our countries problems, that many caches are right Now being hidden/buried. Yes, you can stumble across a cache when coin or relic hunting but the most are found by careful research.

Re: Looking for leads in Maine...where to look?
I know, In high school I planted a cache of about 100 clad and some silver jewelry, rings and such. Just kid stuff, buried treasure wishes I guess. Anyways, to get give someone some fun, here is an idea where it is, Taunton MA, Between Scadding and Prospect Hill St on a leading ridge to the Summit of Prospect hill, downhill from the water holding. Why am I saying this? I don't live there anymore, doubt I ever will retrieve it and It'll give someone something to search for. It was there as of 1996

Sometimes people buried there money instead of taking it to the bank but there are no stories about such caches all the time. By hunting old houses and cellar holes you might get lucky and find one. To find old houses and see if they are abandoned check out the web site

another place up here in maine to look for is the endless rockwalls that were once fields and other places were tree's inside them, look for weird growths or scars on the trees most of the time the tree grows around into around metal fencing but i know of guys cutting tree's and there chain is all of a sudden flinging coins out and also farmers had a thing about burying there money in a jar or a tin can near around the barns, just in case there house burnt down which did occur alot up here in the winter
always on the quest of finding the machine that fits me!
