A very informative read and I read every word of it. It is always good to get continuing confirmation that the policy of "Run Silent, Run Deep." continues to be the best choice of serious treasure hunters. To choose otherwise is to choose pain in all of its stupendous forms...but, if you are a sadist, proceed with your idealistic notions of how the government will look out for your best interests.

Awesome information and people wonder if they should say anything about that 200 thousand dollars gold and silver coin horde they found. It sounds allot like if you treat it right you may keep it but only depending on your wording. Now myself I would slip the find with the owner but other than that I don't need any added publicity and everyone should understand what that means... HH everyone

Very good read. Just goes to prove how our socialist government continues to try and empty our pockets. The main issue here is, and I know it will be difficult is to keep your larger cache finds TO YOURSELF. I have had substantial finds in my 30 yrs of treasure hunting and have released a few of them on posts, but rest assured the larger ones are keep confidential. The element of common sence comes to play when there is a large find.
    Rules of thumb to follow:
    1. When hunting for a large cache or finding relics of substantial value HUNT ALONE. Loose lips sink ships.
    2. If in fact you find a hoard of gold or silver coins of great value, purchase a large gun safe and by no means put them in a safety deposit box.
    3. Keep your story and details to yourself, even though you want to boast, keep information to yourself.
    4. Use common sence when selling your cache, sell a little at a time, therefore keeping yourself out of the media and being able to keep all your monies from sales.
    5. Some might feel this is unethical, and maybe it is to those that haven't experienced this, but I have been down this road and these steps keep your money in your pocket, and not the governments, hence another day to find another big ticket item.

Obama will be out the next election . I think everyone has had enough of this.
I do not think I have spoke to anyone as of late that has liked what he has done or is doing.

And yes , do not say a word to anyone but the ones you have to , and you will be ok.
If you speak out then as bad as the States and government of the Fed needs and want money they
will do all they can to get it.

You mean the country that barely noticed the recession two years ago ? Funny thing to happen for such a socialist country.

Ask Odyssey what they think of Florida & Us laws relating to treasure. (Not that I would expect Canada to be any better in this regard)

    Not an attack on you.

More of an attack on anti-treasure hunting governments.

nonononono. You have to bury them in a new cache to keep the tradition going.

Re: and if you need more proof to keep quiet, read this

Thank you for posting that link - I read it all - and it has a lot of great information.

I'm not sure how we got Obama involved, but, if you read this article carefully, you will note that, first: Kleeberg wrote this PRE-Obama.

Second, that most all these cases are in the 1930's, 1940's, 1950's, 1960's, 1970's and 1980's. A few are in the 1990's, and one (the very latest one) was done in 1995.

This assault on metal detecting, treasure trove findings, etc. have been sneaking right up for years and years.

I don't think "socialism" has a dang thing to do with it. In my own opinion, it has seemed like, more and more, the government just wants our
money, no matter what it is from.

If they take something away from you at the airport - you don't get it back - they sell it.

And, in the "sore subject" category, when someone gets fined - where does all that money go? Into some hole in some government officials pockets. Like the huge fines with the drug companies - victims didn't get that money - some agency got it. Same with the tobacco companies,
the oil companies (like, where are the millions of dollars the oil company got fined for the oil spill last year).

It's just that the government is getting more and more brazen - they forgot, a long time ago, that the government IS the people. Not the people
    we elect.

There is a time coming that - everything will be illegal in one sense or another, for one reason or another. The folks in office - all sides, are bought and owned by special interest groups. Metal detectorists, prospectors and the like are not "organized".

Some of the most "socialist" countries have much better treasure laws than we have, and have had for years.

Like was said - do your thing - and keep your mouth shut.
