UpDated :Civil War Cache Hunting

Hey Tnet,Here is an idea id like to propose to you guys about civil war cache hunting.As we all know alot of valuable items were siezed/taken by soldiers from both sides of the civil war in the mid to late 1800`s. Alot of those valuables were buried in caches along the routes traveled between battlefields and planned to have been recovered at a later date.Searching known civil war battlefields are always fun but im thinking about places where they may have hidden those valuables before ensuing battles.
Im a native of virginia and there are alot of ridge lines in the mountains that resemble paths,Some mountains have 5 to 6 ridge lines before reaching a summit and would most likely have been a route of travel in order to stay hidden from opposing forces due to the terrain and thick vegetation here in VA. Im thinking about walking some of these ridge lines with the metal detector just to see what i can recover. Ive planned to try this sometime within the next week or two in a mountainous area about ten miles west of where union army general burbridge made his camp here in grundy VA on his way to the raid on saltville. I was just wondering if any other VA,KY natives have tried this method,and if so,What were the results?


I have seen alot of posts on Tnet where ppl add photos of there hunt,My Hunting partner and i both have saturday august 6th off from work and have a camping trip to the mountains planned from the evening of the fifth to the late evening of the seventh,Im going to take photos of the aboved mentioned area and post them here so that you ppl that arent familiar with the area can better understand what im up against here,Searching for civil war caches in this area is very diffcult due to the terrain but i know the caches are out there,Most have been found by deer hunters and mushroom hunters over the years,Minus the occasional farming recoverys.Set notifications for this post so that when i upload pictures after the hunt,You more experienced cache hunters can point out some places that look more likely to be a spot that would have been chosen to hide a cache.Because two days hunting isnt going to be anywhere near enough time to cover this much terrain.But any suggestions of places to search in a mountainous area would be much appreciated before the hunt. We have found some civil war related materials in the past around this area,But this hunt is planned more along the routes they would have traveled to known encampment sites.

Makes perfect sense to me . I've got a section of the Jones/Imboden Raid route including a marshalling point to hunt . Just haven't had much time to work it .

i was raised in dickenson county ,i think u might be on to something,i have done alot of metal detecting over that way
