Yanito's gallery is filled with beautifully crafted contemporary pieces -- traditional blankets and bowls, sand paintings and jewelry, most of it handmade by Yanito's extended family. There are no prehistoric pots or arrowheads. Yanito wouldn't dream of entering a ruin.

"The cliff dwellings are ALL grave sites and everyone knows that," he says. "The dead should be left alone."

Yanito, son of a medicine man, grew up in a traditional hogan on the nearby reservation where he still lives. He knows the history of the region as well as anyone, how "pot-hunting" began in the late 1800s when a Colorado rancher discovered the Anasazi ruins in Mesa Verde.
...

Such arguments strike Yanito as hollow. He believes that all ancient artifacts, ruins and burials -- including those on private lands -- should be left undisturbed. He points to the example of a well-known Santa Fe dealer, Forrest Fenn, who owns and is privately excavating an entire pueblo settlement on his land. (Fenn's home was raided as part of the investigation, though he has not been charged.)

Why should he be entitled to these things, Yanito asks. Who gives him that right?

Why should someone think it is OK to dig up and sell an ancient menstrual cloth, he continues, his voice filled with disgust. "That is pure evil."

Yanito picks up the flute and starts playing, a slow, haunting, Navajo tune about living in harmony with nature, about living in harmony with each other. There is no harmony when there is looting, Yanito says, after he finishes.

As a sign of solidarity and to help out our Colleague, I at this time would like VOR to return all he has found that belong to my Ancestors. since he believes that all should stay buried.
No, history is meant to be discovered and the archaic rules that let a house be built on a property but god forgive me if I dig a hole, history is destroyed every day around the world, I see us as warriors preserving history, o yea how many casinos where built on sacred ground, visit FOXWOODS to see lol.

Why does everyone assume he drove to bury it? he is a pilot."not far but too far to walk"... do any of your areas have a nearby airport? The spot I have researched has a small airpot near it with rental cars nearby, plus many hints match up, BUT FF did say how there are 9 clues in the poem...He started reading at "where warm..." I think there is a decipher to do before knowing what exact clues to use in the search. I have tried three ways of deciphering and nothing has panned out yet... anyone know old navajo code from vietnam? he was a fighter pilot in vietnam shot down twice. Does anyone know if he was still flying when he hid the treasure? and every letter of the alphabet is in the poem except for "X"....

Hi, I would think that flying would be a bad idea if I'm not mistaken you have to file with the FAA a rout you are taking, also again I'm not certain but the documents are accessible to the public.

After standing on many a peak in several New Mexico Mountains. I have seen the extreme amount of area one would have to travel to search for this treasure. This story breaks several rules of treasures. I will be watching.

Every letter except "X", huh? Sounds familiar. There are two other very curious things in the poem that I am working out...I'm confident that the poem is a cypher.

if i find it i will take some treasure i.e. placer nugget and a jade bracelet, maybe 25-100 gold coins and leave the rest lay in the same spot, no need for all the treasure, just enough will do.. I will write a book and let people know another clue, cause forrest will not be around forever, plus who needs the attention, and you would have to say where you found it... for me i will say i found it in my backyard , when that happens you will know i found it. not by me saying i found it..

Hangtown, that's what I was saying! Whoever finds it should add something to it and re-hide it with their poem. One must read all poems in order to figure out the current one. This could be an exclusive club in 10 years, like the Barkley Run.

As for a joining a search team? When I first started this journey, I was never willing to help anyone, or share ideas. I changed that, because I realize whoever finds it may have used my knowledge, and that makes me feel like I am a part of the hunt even though I'm a long way away from Santa Fe.

I'm willing to do a lot of research online and collaborate. Check my previous postings for some of my ideas. If you have any ideas that need checking out, I have free time to do some research everyday.

Obviously this quote went over your head.

I can agree that history is to be discovered, however, there is an exception to this statement. Grave robbing. We are speaking of someone that had no qualms with digging up graves of spiritual people, stripping their ceremonial masks, moccasins, jewelry and everything else that prepared them for their afterlife. Then dumping their remains (sometime keeping parts of them) back into a hole.

Similar to me finding the grave of your great grandmother, digging her up, pulling her rings off of her bony fingers and dumping her back into a common hole with others buried near her.

Only it is a bit worse as their burial preparation was of utmost importance.

If Forrest had any morals (especially after his near death bout with cancer) you would think that he would try to buy back what he stole from the graves and reunite the "artifacts" with the bodies they were meant to grace.

Instead, a publicity stunt to enhance his ego and sell books for those that are so preoccupied with finding his mythical box that they come around to his way of thinking.

Negative Nelly? How about realistic. It is a sad commentary to our modern society that we hold so little respect for those who walked before us.

Hope you find your treasure that was made from selling the souls of others.

Ok I never post on here but had to respond to Vor. Vor you are way too negative. First off do you have proof that he robbed graves? Yes the FBI investigated him and obviously they don't have enough proof to convict. Have you seen FBI reports? No because they havent been made public. How do you know any of the treasure comes from grave robbing. Any treasure could honestly be from "selling souls" so pirate treasure not blood money? Jesse James treasure? Butch Cassidy treasure? Even if it is hoax like Forrest said the thrill is in the chase. Me and my daughter are having more fun bonding and researching together then it would be to go straight to the treasure. Get off your high horse and Forrests nuts.

Vor, I hear what you are saying and I consider myself to be an ethical guy, but some of the gold he mined from Alaska. That doesn't mean he should return it to mother Earth!

Besides, there is one major difference between an amateur archaeologist ( Fenn ) and a professional one. The professional one usually works for the government, or government contractor, and the government wants all of the recognition and rights to everything. If you don't give the gov. what it wants, it will find a way to make it illegal. So, do I believe the FBI, when it comes to Forrest? Not a chance. If I buy a big piece of land and start my own excavation, and find something, you can be sure the government will come knocking.

Now with that said, if Fenn did hit graves, shame on him. Show me a picture of him doing so, and I will stop searching for the treasure.

Start a thread about it. This thread is for discussing the hunt. And I don't believe he was ever convicted of anything. Plus dont they dig up a tomb every year in Egypt? Go bark up another tree Vor. Your obviously in need of attention.

guys , what we have to keep in mind is this is a open forum , and anyone can post with in reason what they want about the topic.
Vor is not the only person that feels this man is a grave robber, from what i have read there are alot of people think that way.
What makes this hard to judge is from the picture and comments he made about this chest there may be some gold idols which some feel are stolen from tombs in south america , but also coins and nuggets that he could have got legit .
this topic of disturbing graves has come up in other topics also and is a touchy subject , but it is like every thing else in life ,, there are going to be alot of different opinions .
As long as there is no name calling or harassment anyone can and should post there thoughts ,, imagine if we all seen things the same way all the time what a boring world it would be.
