the Best for those depths would be a Minelab Gold detector.

    but they are Expensive.

You may want to first try with a Top of the Line

Whites, XLT or DFX with a Large Coil.

or a Minelab Explorer with a 15" coil.

The Wrapping Shouldn't effect getting a Signal.
as long as it's not in Rusted Tin.

If you have a pretty good idea where the treasure is, it might be a good idea to even rent a Minelab for a couple of days . The outer rubber, etc will have no effect on sending a signal. Best of luck and I hope to see your pics of the find soon!

I know Minelabs and Whites are top of the line detectors, but wouldn't you need a 2-box rig to get a signal at 3 to 5 foot deep? Just my 2 cents. Good Luck hope you find it!

I dont want to sound like I am promoting one brand over another...but my daughter Cheyenne dug a cant hook at over three feet....with her Bounty Hunter....and she just kept getting a strong signal and kept digging.....thought she was going to China...And often when I know a signal is going to be deep I will use that same Bounty hunter to locate it when my signal quits or is erratic...But I am by far not an expert....I do know that there are some Minelab Owners here who swear on the depth they are finding their coins at....and the Minelab seems to go deep....

and I'v gotten signals 3 Feet deep on 12 oz Beer cans
with my Sovereign & 15" WOT Coil.

I'v had signals deeper, I'v given up on.

5 Feet ? I'd say you should get something.

    Hi Ed,

Most of electronics metal detectors operate on electromagnetic principles, wherein all non conducting materials will be bypass or ignored by the magnetic field. Since rubber and plastic are non conducting materials, it will not be a hindrance to any electromagnetic propagation and radiations.
Regarding the depth of object, correct type of detector must be used. For 3-5 feet depth , it is advisable to use a pulse induction type, two-box type or any other deep seeking detector with larger search coil.

Re: if the item wrape with rubber?

Last week I spoke with someone at Kelly co and asked a similar question I was wondering if the gold was inside of a clay pot if the detector would pick it up.
The guy that I spoke with said that a two box detector probably wouldent pick it up but a Pulse Induction unit would have a better chance of finding it.
    What do you guys think?

Seems to me if a two box unit will pick up gold that is wrapped in rubber then it would pick it up inside of a clay pot but I am no expert. And I don’t want to buy a two box unit it that is not going to help me. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

2 box Detectors are great for Finding Very Large Objects.

But not so good on Smallar Clay pot size objects

What kind of detector would you recommend for finding something that is buried in a clay pot?
    What would you use?

    at 3 to 5 Feet,
I'd be confident using my Sovereign with a WOT Coil and Disc turned all the way down.
If that didn't work, I'd try All Metal. but I don't think it would be Necessary unless it's VERY DEEP or not there.

Yes. ALL METAL Means just that. the detector will detect All metal.

on the Sovereign in Discriminate, it will tune out Rusted tin and some Iron even with the Discriminate turned all the way down.
which could cause a slight loss in depth.

I got a signal awhile back and at about 10 inches I hit what sounded like glass. Turned out it was part of an old Crock...Small piece of iron under it made the signal. Having had this happen with my detector I sure dont see where a clay pot would be a problem other than the depth you're talking about. I mean a clay pot is earth is it not? I thought the worst one to deal with was glass as it is so insulating.
    My two cents.

I have the same experience with a BH 1100 that I bought for 29.99 as a back up, I swear it goes deeper than my $300 Tesoro, otherwise its a POS, but when its goes beep I dig & have been surprised

Re: if the item wrape with rubber?

    Hi Ed,

rubber and plastic would not affect the reading of a MD as explained in earlier posts, it will also pic up coins inside a piggy bank or wooden chest, im affirming this since im in the philippines. I have the same minelab sov as jeff(wish i had your WOT!) and it works very well in our soil the same with the discovery tf-900 2 box, I have been a detectorist for 9 yrs, out of my experience there are two reasons we could not find the target, 1) out of range targets due to depth and wrong MD settings that diminish range or causes falsing 2) NO TARGET AT ALL. We should always consider reason number 2, be objective and not to force the circumstances(wishfull thinking) HH

    God bless,

    jose
