Feedom of Choice

blackboard-B.gif

How we construct meaning is actually a matter of personal, intentional choice.
When an individual effectively gives up his or her freedom of choice in constructing meaning to another entity based on faith and faith alone, put simply, they are effectively asking to be hosed by the person or persons they trust when material gain or loss is evident. Beware the Naysayer is deeply embeded in the thinking of the TOTC "true believers". That beware the naysayer "Chant" also plays a part in the John Hersey book, Too Far To Walk.

Dante-1.jpg

Dante Alighieri was born in 1265 died 1321.

Dante was an Italian poet and moral philosopher best known for the epic poem The Divine Comedy, which comprises sections representing the three tiers of the Christian afterlife: purgatory, heaven, and hell. This poem, a great work of medieval literature and considered the greatest work of literature composed in Italian, is a philosophical Christian vision of mankind’s eternal fate. Dante is seen as the father of modern Italian, and his works have flourished since before his 1321 death.

The Divine Comedy is an allegory of human life presented as a visionary trip through the Christian afterlife, written as a warning to a corrupt society to steer itself to the path of righteousness: "to remove those living in this life from the state of misery, and lead them to the state of felicity." The poem is written in the first person (from the poet’s perspective) and follows Dante's journey through the three Christian realms of the dead: hell, purgatory, and finally heaven. The Roman poet Virgil guides Dante through hell (Inferno) and purgatory (Purgatorio), while Beatrice guides him through heaven (Paradiso). The journey lasts from the night before Good Friday to the Wednesday after Easter in the spring of 1300 (placing it before Dante’s factual exile from Florence, which looms throughout the Inferno and serves as an undercurrent to the poet’s journey).

How are things at club Daja-Vu Frankn? Does the poster Vor stop by from time to time?
Possibly you would be able to give Vor some tips on the TOTC book sales profits which
seemed to be of considerable interest to him.

Meek-Joseph_1.jpg

So then, from the poem map: "From there it's no place for the meek."

I had Joseph Meek (1810–1875) as an option or I could pursue the mystical/ Christian Biblical option. So far the mystical option was looking better and better with every step I took. "Dance with the one that brung you" is my motto. Even if it is the Texas Two Step. After all, Hell is no place for the meek. For the meek shall inheret the earth, or so I have read somewhere. Anyway, Joe Meek declared that the fur trade was dead in the Rocky Mountains and was no place for the Meek family and split for Oregon where he took up farming. Joe did rather well in Oregon. Joe Meek made a difference. The picture with this post was when Joe Meek was Sheriff of what is now Washington County, Oregon.

Moving Along

Faust-meph.jpg

If the reader has the stomach for this much detail, have at it. If not, just move along.

My interpretation of the TOTC poem map found that Fenn introduced mystical/fictional characters Faust and Mephistopheles into the Chase game thru the fictional characters John Fist and Breed in John Hersey's book, Too Far To Walk.

"Faust is the protagonist of a classic German legend; a highly successful scholar but one dissatisfied with his life who therefore makes a pact with the Devil, exchanging his soul for unlimited knowledge and worldly pleasures. The Faust legend has been the basis for many literary, artistic, cinematic, and musical works that have reinterpreted it through the ages."

"The story was popularised in England by Christopher Marlowe ( 1564 – 30 May 1593), who gave it a classic treatment in his play, The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus. In Goethe's reworking of the story two hundred years later, Faust becomes a dissatisfied intellectual that yearns for "more than earthly meat and drink" in his life."

"The Emperor William II of Germany (1859 – 1941) erected a Monument to Goethe (by Gustav Eberlein), in Villa Borghese Park, Rome, Italy where Goethe (1749 - 1832) is shown with Mignon, Iphigeneia and Faust.
In the attached photograph of a portion of the monument to honor Goethe, Faust is shown with Mephistpopheles, known as the mystical Devil's agent in Goethe's writings."

"Faust and the adjective Faustian imply a situation in which an ambitious person surrenders moral integrity in order to achieve power and success for a delimited term. Translated as "fist" in High German, the name "Faust" suggests someone who resorts to extraordinary means to achieve goals, akin to if not actually involving force; it also implies unusual tenacity and persistence."

The Dark Wood

Dark_Wood_Wallpaper_.jpg

From the poem map:

"So hear me all and listen good,
Your effort will be worth the cold.
If you are brave and in the wood
I give you title to the gold."

My interpretation:
The hear me all part at the end of the poem map is addressed to lost sinners just outside the Gates of Hell who are lost in the dark wood of transgression and/or moral confusion. Such are still among the living. The Dark Wood is just outside the gates of Hell in Dante's Inferno.

Uncertain what the deal is with giving those who are brave and in the wood the title to the gold tho. In some cases, sinners can be forgiven by paying for forgiveness for the lesser sins. Or maybe Fenn thinks he is authorized to forgive certain sins. Like a Fenn get out of Hell card?

According to Dante, the lowest part of Hell (9th Circle) is at the center of the earth and is a FROZEN LAKE where Satin resides. Worth the cold according to Fenn maybe? Not sure though.

In Dante's Inferno, the 9th level of hell has a frozen lake called Cocytus. It's a frozen lake, because hell is envisioned by Dante as a funnel to the center of the earth, and in Dante's time, people didn't know that the earth became hotter towards the center due to the molten core. He thought that the earth became colder towards the center. It's a lake because it's the origin of all the other rivers of Hell. Dante tells us that the lake is caused by Satan who was banished to the bottom of Hell by God and as Satan attemps to escape, he flaps his wings, and the lake continues to freeze. The 9th layer of hell (according to Dante) is reserved for traitors who are frozen in the lake and can spend eternity suffering.

You're over thinking a simple rhyme which leads to nowhere. Sure your on the right thread?

Dante's Inferno! I really don't think Fenn's thinking goes that deep. How about Alice's Adventures Underground! Frank...

Hay Frankn. Borrowed your 22' Xplorer on a Ram diesel chassis again. Hope you don't
mind.
You could be correct concerning the depth of Fenn's thinking, or you might be surprised.
Keep in mind though Frankn, Fenn only has to be a deeper thinker than his quarry. So far
it looks like he is deeper than the vast majority of his quarry.

Did you notice the elk beside it? That was taken on my cache hunt in PA.
Actually Fenn enjoys winning, and if no one finds a cache he considers he has won. He once said, "All I want to see is sweaty bodies out there looking for my cache."
