Hey Pegleg, Mission bells were used as a road guide up and down the California coast and inland to the various missons built, if you look hard enough you can still locate them as they are still hanging in some places from their original posts. Their are a few on Ventura blvd.,running through the san fernando valley. As you state, a lot were stolen. Ghost

The bells of El Camino Real (The Busy Kings Highway) were made in the early 1900's and have been resurrected by the original foundry in recent years...Huel Howser's California's Gold series featured the manufacturing and placement of these bells.
