Help needed

I have a Civil War sword that my GF gave to me after her father passed away. He was a big Civil War buff and collector. The tag that was on it stated Union Army. I think it's a calvary sword, but I'm not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The only writing I can make out is the 1D72.(pictured)

being a true rebel from deep dixie i want to say throw it in the dump,,BUT , i am going to say to keep it, i have seen several selling around 3000.00-3500.00 and have heard of them selling for much more, especially if it is engraved or proven to belong to a certain soldier...some of the makers marks will also add to the value...........very nice, and the first sentance is a joke {sort of} .......gldhntr
