I've always wondered why these huts are so deep. I know 140 years is a long time, but where does all this dirt come fron? Stupid question I know. Any answers? A friend of mine dug a hut 3 ft. deep in SC.

Artillery rounds coming down on your position at night while you are sleeping gives you a better chance of survival in a hole, during the winter time you can stay warmer in a hole. Believe me I know.....to much time in tent city at Graffenwoehr, Germany.
