Help with button I.D.

Dug these buttons in york county S.C. Could anyone tell me what era there from?

If i had to guess i would say they are civil war era naval buttons, but im no expert.

Very nice buttons and very hard to find types. Those appear to be Union Marine Corps buttons. The Confederate Marine buttons that I have seen just the a large bold M on it, kinda like the block I buttons....HH....Bill

P.s. Well,,, after taking a closer look, maybe not, there looks to be some small differences in the two, but they are very close.

Alot of the worth of the buttons depends on the writing on the back or benchmark, they come in differant quality. like "super" or "extra quality" ect. ect. It almost seems like the benchmark defines the value of the button more than what it is. And the same goes for all CW relics, Confedarate relics are always worth more than Union relics....HH.....Bill
