    CW Sites on the Potomac?

    Greetings Fellow THers:

I have a boat (pic attached) and a Surf PI and I'd like to know if there are any less accessible spots on the Potomac that might have some CW relics. I keep my boat at Fort Belvoir.

    Thanks in advance,
    JasonB

Here's one map of the Potomac:

Note the ferries and fords located on the map. These locations would be great places to hunt for relics.

A Google search of the Potomac River during the Civil War will lead you to more. You can also search the Official Records (OR's) for reports of commanding officers along the Potomac. You can search the OR's here:

    http://digital.library.cornell.edu/m/moawar/waro.html

You are in a great area for hunting.

Thanks so much. I'll definitely check the references. If any are on private land, I can then try for permission. I wonder if I can hunt in the water without permission. Anyone know the rules?

Do a search for your state laws on navagable waterways. It should be that since the Potomac is a navagable waterway that all land and water between the high water mark should be public domain. But then again I don't know the laws for your state. You can find the laws online... somewhere.

Both banks of the Potomac will surely have CW relics, you need to do a little more research. Don't forget that even after the CW Booth was along the Maryland banks looking to cross back to VA, and there were plenty of federal troops in that area searching for him.

There was a gun pit just up the bank from the dock you are on too bad is in the park. just about every main point on the river had a outlook or gun pit on both sides. One of these days I will put the detector in the bass boat!
