Check this out... U.S. buckle worked on.
Found this recently. Its not much to look at but its got some originality value. Sometime along this buckles travels almost all of the brass was cut off the face. But the U.S. imprint in the lead remains and its my first buckle with arrow hook attachments.

Just curious but did they fill a brass front with lead to make these buckles? I have never even held one in my hands to look at it. If this is how they were made it seems to me like the buckle just came apart, maybe the face of it is close by. I would be on cloud 9 to find one like yours even.

There is still a small amount of brass on its top right edge that's why I think its been cut off. Not for sure it just looks as if might have been. And I don't know if they filled them but I assume they did cause they had to set the hook assembly in the lead too.

These were at two completely differant places and both were not expected. These are my only 2 buckles. I have found a early militia sash buckle and 2 breast plates. But its taken two and a half years.

Was it dug in a field or low swampy area. I've dug them and seen them dug in these types of areas The ground was acidic enough that it ate the brass face leaving the lead and hooks. On a couple the lead that was behind the brass was still shiney for some reason.

Re: Check this out... U.S. buckle worked on.
Nice find, congrats!!! It is my dream to someday dig a plate.
I live in Ohio and my buddy and I were hunting a site that was being demolished for a new school. A fellow running a back hoe, told my buddy to check out a pile of dirt he was about to push into a hole. My buddy did and found what he thought was a Budweiser belt buckle. I told him, it wasn't a beer buckle, it looked like a CW belt buckle. Sure enough it was a Officers Sword Belt plate. What a great find, you just never know what you will find in this hobby.
