newbie intro and questions

This is essentially a duplicate post from cache hunting but I reposted here since it is CW specific.

I'm new at this and not quite sure where to begin. My particular situation is somewhat unique. I live in the area that was decimated by order #11 during the civil war. Actually, I'm within 5 miles of the location for the Battle of Lone Jack. I'm in a rural farming area with access to several thousand acres of private land (a lot of which may well have never been detected--being a neighbor garners easier access than a stranger) that should be chock full of relics and if I could locate the homesteads, probably also caches buried before the forced depopulation of the county. These folks had to leave and mostly left on foot. They had to carry what they could with them and I imagine a number of them buried valuables to be retrieved later. Many never returned. But all of the homes were burned so I am trying to hunt down an old map that might help me in locating these homesites for extreme northeastern Cass County. Any ideas or insights.

i just did a search on Lone Jack and if it was me i would start close to Noah Hunt's Mill if you can get on it any time there was a mill in an area it seen some kind of action, and this one is no different it was a field hospital...then i would try and find the Yankee House.

A very good friend of mine lives in the yankee house. It is no longer recognizable as civil war era, it has had so many additions and repairs. He has a rather large cattle and crop operation. I've not looked over his ground for any other old building sites yet but plan to. I am just getting started and have lots and lots of acres to survey.

My bad. Wrong yankee house. I was referring to the house that the union soldiers didn't burn and used as an outpost during the execution of order number 11. Different place than in the pic I just googled.

I have a friend who bought some property in Lone Jack right off the old Lees Summit/LoneJack Road. What I have read about the battle of Lone Jack is that all the action was pretty much centered right in the main part of town. I'm thinking that they probably set up a camp on the property. The troops were not there long so unless you were right up in town I'm not sure what you would find.

I also dream of finding a cache of something that was buried during order # 11. You might check out the museum in Lone Jack to locate old maps of the area.

Just start detcting the fields. If your so close to a battlesite you should be able to find lead atthe very least. Bullets fly a long way.
