Seven miles east of Big Sandy, the Danville River Bridge was a pivot
bridge over the Tennessee River on the railroad connecting Memphis
to Bowling Green, Kentucky. A Confederate supply depot with a Con-
federate gold and silver payroll in a safe, was said to be have been
located on the west end of the Danville Bridge during the Civil War.

The bridge and payroll were being guarded by a Confederate com-
pany when news arrived that Union soldiers were coming upriver. The
Confederate guards hurriedly put the safe on a hand car and pushed
it onto the bridge. The bridge was pivoted and the cart and safe were
both dumped into the river on the upstream side. A drawbridge is said
to be now located at the site of the old Danville Bridge. 1
