BELL COUNTY KENTUCKY UNION PAYROLL LOST

A $3 million treasure in gold and silver bars was said to have been
thrown into a bend of the Sandy River near Pineville by a Union
paymaster when a band of Confederates approached. However, since
paymasters were held personally liable for funds in their charge it does
not seem likely that the ingots, if they existed, would have been thrown
    into the river.
