CW Button?
1st time posting with picture. Im using a Hewlet-pack.under a magnifying glass.
Anyway found these buttons at civil war sites in southeast missouri.
Ive been told the 1st button is but would like to get a 2nd opinion from any experts.
The back of the button is too corroded to read but it still has some gold type gilt.
Does it have anything written on the back? If so I might be able to tell you something. If it has a stud instead of a hook it might be a WWI collar stud. If it has a shank and nothing on the back I don't think I can help on this one.

The iron back.
Navy buttons from that era did not have an iron back. They were either brass two-piece buttons or hard rubber buttons.

Like Buckle Boy said, the ironback.
The type of shank and how flimsy it is is another
Also the thickness of the eagles, body, legs and wings. On most civil war navies the eagle will have thinner features and the chest is usually not raised so much.
If you look on ebay you might find a button just like yours that was dug at Gettysburg.
