For the last year or so, I have been doing some heavy-duty genealogical research on my family. I came across a story about my great-great-great uncle that was published in a gazette from the 80's produced by the local genealogy society. A part of the story that really caught my eye was this:

"During the Civil War a New Orleans bank sent money in kegs to George Koepp to keep from being taken by the Federals occupying the city. The kegs, containing silver and gold coins, were sent by boat to Madisonville. Koepp claimed the kegs and buried them in the Black River. After the war, he recovered the kegs and returned them to the bank in New Orleans by railroad through Ponchatoula."

Egads! I live on the old family property, and the back of it borders the Black River (not really a river...more of a creek). If only he had not returned those kegs! Couldn't he have kept one buried for himself? *Sigh* The lost possibilities...
