    Civil war rifle need ID..

Posted this on the what is this site. But doing it here also. Need information on both rifles. Mainly ID on the bottom one. I know the top is a 1879 Winchester .32cal. with a low three digit serial number. Need any information on both. No marks on the CW rifle at all.
Refer to the "what is it thread " for a second closer photograph.
    THANKS!

Re: Civil war rifle need ID..

I'm no expert, but I'll give my opinion on this. I would have to guess that the second weapon was personally owned. I've never seen a military issue rifle from that period with a back action lock or of that general style. It might have been issued as a foraging gun. Especially if it was smoothbore.

What was the unit of the soldier in question? He probably brought his personal rifle when he showed up to fight.

As far as the rifle itself, I would hate to guess. You might try a google search for back action rifle or back action muzzleloader and find something comparable.
