Confederate Rifle Pits

After hiking a few miles and then up the ridge we came to the old rifle pits erected by Confederate troops. It runs along the top of the ridge for several miles. Some places it is no wider than 30 yards at most and most places smaller than that. To retreat from here was a very steep rocky incline. They never had to retreat and held this position. I hope to return and photograph with better equipment than an iPhone as we get ready to celebrate 150 years. This is just a small sampling of a short section. This is a row of rocks assembled at the crest edge for defense.

Sometimes they would make a "T" for better protection with stacked stone.




They often utilized natural rock formations to build a pit.They would stack stone between larger rocks for protection. There are dozens like this one.

Actually just one day. They shelled and attacked the area several times but could not break through. They ended up flanking them so the Confederates retreated. It was to good of a position it seems. Every day was a running battle towards Atlanta.

Of course. Nothing great just some fired bullets and very small square nails. Did not have a lot of time as it was a couple miles to hike in and out plus it is deer season and did not want to mess anyones hunt up. I know where to hunt when I return . Thanks for looking.

I thought about that and when I go back I will have more time to check out the blown out sections of walls. I hate to mess with left though. Cool history. Thanks Hutch.

This is right before Dalton Ga. Coming from Chattanooga. No I have not been back. I am hunting some places in Chattanooga and North Ga. Found some buttons and bullets and gun parts.
