I thought I would share this find from several years ago. I found this ID tag at an old stage coach station back in 1993 with my CZ5.
On the worn side has NYSV along the rim is the name Thomas M Scott CO C 144th reg. On the Eagle side has The War of Union and 1861,2,3 This is my best find and I have been doing it since the mid 80's. Posted on another forum and got some good info.
He enlisted at the age of 19 on Aug 25,1862, promoted to Corporal April 12,1863 and to Sergeant Oct1,1864. Mustered out on June 25,1865 @ Hilton Head SC

144th NY Infantry Regiment during the Civil War - NY Military Museum and Veterans Research Center Sorry if this is a double post , When I went to edit I think I lost the original :

NYS VOL units were formed in specific locations , with the companies being drawn from the areas around at town that's name would work into the Reg companys organization

The company D was formed in Franklin NY ( read link )

Delhi/ Franklin was a pretty good sized towns and was a major railroad link in that time. Also Deleware Cty history is pretty well documented on the web, Might be worth some exploring to gain more info on him

In case you wonder I lived up there for 30 years --- Great Find

He was born in 1842. Scroll down to the April 4, 2011 entry and you'll note his name as having lived in Bovina (NY). This blogger also intended to write a bio of each man on that list; perhaps he has already written about Thomas Scott.
Don..
Bovina (NY) History: April 2011

Thanks. I will email this guy and see what he has on him. I also saw another Scott a year apart in age, I wonder if it is a brother?? served in same Reg..

Thanks

The site that this ID tag was found at was the route that Gen. Morgan and his raider took during Morgans Raid through OH.( July of 1863)They were stealing horses and supplies at this little town but were not there long before the Union cavalry was hot on there tail. Morgans raiders took this road out of town. The 144th N.Y.S.V were not part of the pursuit though. I think he just migrated west like a lot of folks did after the war.
