I recovered this bullet at an old home site in NW South Carolina. It appears it might be a civil war bullet, but not used in the war....maybe a bring home surplus used for hunting or?
I have done some reloading so I have some idea of what is currently being used. The bullet is 58 caliber & weighs in at 475 grains & appears have 2 or 3 very thin lube rings & has a flat base.
Help identifying would be appreciated.

Looks like a CW Merrill carbine that's been fired. Off top the head. Should be more like .54 cal however

Only thing I can find is it could be a 58 cal Linder carbine

But the weight is 35 grains light

Still say it favors a us 54 Merrill

But it could be a field casted 58 cal bullet
