This was a surprise, but measures out and matches on line photo from a museum site which contains examples of Shovels, Picks and a variety of Ax heads that were found at a union camp near Fredericksburg VA. IMAG0624b.jpg IMAG0623.jpg

That is neat. I found a pick that the yankee's had thrown in the river but never a shovel or axe in a camp. Nice find...d2

Alabama 11, here is a shovel that I found back in the 80s in a Civil War camp near Vicksburg. With the exception of some modifications made by someone for unknown reasons, this shovel appears to be a match for yours. I believe they are definitely Civil War era shovels. Congratulations on your find.

Great shovel you found.
My best friend got a perfect pick on the farm. Union general McCook and 20000 men marched past the house in 1863. Will put a photo of it on this site soon.

I have one of those shovels in killer shape.
Cool find... WD.

Tis an uncommon one like mine...

Wonder if yours has "added lip" / "foot stike pads".

I am thinking the shovel is cast iron and its weight about 2 pounds. I am going to clean it. Did you clean yours. Best,

The vender had a hole bunch of real junk and other crap...
He was asking stupid money for junk and always does...
He had a pile of tools...
Shovels hoes etc...
I see this in the mix...
I ask him how much for the shovel expecting him to say some crazy price...
He says... "ten bucks"...
Then as I am just kinda stunned...
He goes,,,
Ehhh heck give me eight.

Gladly.

Yes, the shovel has added foot pads with screws attaching the addition. At this time they are crusty and not photogenic. Thanks for your interest and information. Best,
