It is listed in Albert's book on Military buttons, but no attributes there whatsoever.

"Record of American Uniform and Historical Buttons, author Alphaeus A. Albert, Bicentennial Edition, page 327 and 328. He does not identify it, therefore no attributes. It's listed in the Military school section. What is the precise inscription on the back?

thanks, does it list a value or do you think it could be rare. what do you think the letter could mean on it? there was a military academy near where I found it back during the civil war.

It's a school button, I have no idea of the value. Backmark looks a lot like Scovills & Co. Waterbury backmark, so probably 1840-1870.

Smokey is spot on as its listed in alberts book but does not give a name. I have seen several HS but so far no one has been able to ID them. The backmark will give a better date if tou can clean it up to help see which Scovil BM it is. Nice button

the back under close magnification reads at the top, SCOVILL Mf''g Co. and the bottom reads WATURBURY . from what I found online it dates 1850-1865 which would put it civil war range. just don't know what the HS stands for on the front.

Thanks everyone, I really love it. I have found dozens of buttons from the military academy here in the area but none like this one. could the HS have something to do with the academy here even though it does not look like any of thier other buttons? The name of the academy near here was called the Hillsborough Military Academy.
