I dug this bullet at a church that was founded in 1790 and has a lot of history. While I was there an older gentleman and his daughter and her husband stopped at the church and gave me some history of the area. The church is two story with the second story being used by slaves to worship. I later found out he was 90 and he had a great grandpa that told him a story of how when he was a boy he had hid under his bed when the Yankees came through making my bullet even more special. He had a big smile on his face when I showed him. Didn't find much else but I didn't need to for it to be a great day. This is my first find that I think is civil war era. Any feed back would be helpful. I am in eastern N.C. so I know we have history here. Thanks ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1497224413.188275.jpg ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1497224413.188275.jpg

Sure looks like a three-ring Mini ball to me! Ether a 58 or 69 caliber. That's a great story and a heck of a way to find your first CW bullet. You'll never forget your first. Put it in a place of honor. Thanks for sharing!

Agree on minie ball. You can tell more if you can get the caliber on it.

Thanks for the comments. The old man told me he had not been back to that church for nearly 60 years and he was visiting his dads grave site . I was very excited to find it and then to get the story with it was great. I will absolutely put it in a safe place and hope to add to it.

The best way is to use digital calipers. Measure across the bullet and post a picture.
No such thing as a dumb question!

Hardware stores have them in the tool department. Even the cheap ones work pretty good.

Thanks again as it seems my wife sends me there a lot. So now I have a GOOD reason to go there. I will post the caliber when I get it . HH

I got my digital calipers from an auto parts store for about $20.00. The one I got from Lowes didn't last a month. Can you see any marks in the base? Also, post diameter and length measurements and you will get a correct ID.

Looks like you found 2 treasures that day. Anyone 90+ is a national treasure and that beautiful mini ball. Congrats

Thanks Truth1253. I could have listened to more of his stories but he had a family reunion in Morehead City and had to go. I am still curious on the caliber and haven't had a chance to get a caliper yet. I plan on going back to hunt there again on Sunday. HH

Maybe this will get you close. First is a 69, second is 58, should be one or the other. IMG_20170612_204321785.jpg IMG_20170612_204417835.jpg IMG_20170612_204752393_HDR.jpg

Your not kidding! After the initial excitement wore off that was one of my first thoughts. Man it is mean looking. And heavy. HH

I still have a lot to learn and hope to find more relics from this time period. I am in extreme eastern NC so I need to do my research. I also have a lot of pirate history here also.HH
