Hey folks, do you remember your first CW relic? Mine was a bullet, five years ago and I remember it like it was yesterday. I have been fortunate to find some great stuff but that fired three ringer was what got it all started. Seems silly now but I had the shakes when I realized what it was. I have that bullet in a special place and will cherish it always.
Share your story if like.

Very first thing I dug using a metal detector that was Civil War related were handfuls of yankee bullets dropped and thrown as they were crossing a river to get away from the CSA. 5-10 dropped bullets to the hole and I have no idea how many plates we(there were three of us) found in a week or so but at one time I had 2-3 of each side. This was in 68-69 I was 9 or 10 and out with one of my teachers on a battle field, we moved so much during that time period of my life that I have lost those plates but have found two since, one breast plate and one belt plate. I am 60 now and as soon as I get through duck/goose season I'll go back to scouring the camps and such in the piney Arkansas woods and YES, I will have a CS plate...d2

Davers, you wouldn't happen to be talking about the "General, Dent Myers" would you? From the Civil War Shop in downtown Kennesaw.

That's the sort of Enthusiasm I like d2. Continued Success to you. Maybe one day I can stumble across an Eagle Breast Plate.

No not at WildMan's , I do know him ,he has calmed in his Older Age , I don't agree with all his beliefs but honor the rite to have his Opinion.

He is still in the same place , I don't get in as much as I would like , I recall he had some Great old Maps , I wanted but they were to much $ ; tho they were High Quality & Hand drawn, many original (copies) of Sherman's maps as well as others.

The Shop I was taking bout was off Old 41 near New Salem.

I haven't seen Dent Myers for years. He was certainly on a different plain. Not to bash him, he was very knowledgeable about the War of Northern Aggression. There was a story that I heard that happened in his shop years ago. There was a young lad from the metro area that used to show up at some of our Reenactments dressed in WWII German attire. Usually a fatigue hat and the overcoat. Sort of a strange young fellow. He also carried around a Hitler Youth Knife as I recall. He was also escorted from the property anytime he was spotted. He made folks seem a little uneasy and was projecting the wrong time in History, and an image that we as Historians did not want to be associated with. One of the last times I was in Dent's store, who showed up but this same young fella. He was looking at books and Dent was watching him like a Hawk. Dent made the remark that he didn't much care for him or like him coming in his store. Dent used to always wear a 44 cal. revolver on his side. I was told a short time after this that the squirrel was back in Dent's shop once again and a storm suddenly blew up. A sudden heavy roll of thunder and a flash of lightening startled the squirrel and he turned to see Dent drawn down on him with this 44. I was told that Dent told the youth to leave his store and never set foot in it again. I heard that the youth took Dent to his word and soon disappeared.

Neat Story , there are lot's of Cool Dent Myers Stories.

I should get in his place more often , as he is a Very Smart & Knowledgeable Man , was an Engineer at Lockheed Martin if I recall right.

I got most of my reference Books there ( his shop could be a movie set) I used to get all my North South Traders Civil War Mag's there ; til he had an disagreement about an Article.

He still wears his Guns . 8-)

My first civil war relic was a US arrow hook belt plate. I went to a friend's house to go relic hunting. We walked out of his yard & crossed the road to a field. After a few soda cans I got another soda can signal. It was the buckle. I was green at detecting at the time. I had been to spots & watched my buddy's dig bullets. All I wanted that day was a minie ball lol.
