Found these pieces on a CW battlefield here in Mo. I think they are all part of a sabot, but no rifling as near as i can tell. Definitely lead. Any help would help. Screenshot_20180104-113502.png

I'm no Civil War artillery specialist , so.... the lead pieces "Look"as if they could be sabot pieces.

Measurements may be required .

Have any Iron Frags or Complete shells been dug in that area?

Hope you find out as I am curious myself.

Welcome to treasure-Net. & Good Luck.

Yes,i have found pieces of case or exploding shot in the area.
MAYBE 100 yards away from where i found this. I found those about 13 years ago, and the lead i found about 8 months ago.

A good indicator that you have sabot pieces.

Looking Good Man.

I don't see any evidence of rifling on the sabots.

I don't think they're tall enough to be Hotchkiss sabots and they might even be a little too think.

I don't think they're sabots but better pictures and measurements would help.

Good info on the lead pipe theory. If it was a pipe, it exploded in the middle of the woods. All 5 pieces were found inside an area of about a 1/2 acre. So, it's possible. I've found stranger thing!

Gsrxaddict is correct... your long curved lead pieces are from antique plumbing joints in cast-iron pipe. The plumber would first pack the joint with hemp fiber, and then melt lead and pour it into the joint. I was briefly a Plumber's Helper, and when we replaced ancient cast-iron pipes underneath 1800s/early-1900s era houses here in Richmond I've seen those lead pipe-joint seals in real-life. I am 100%-certain that's what your lead finds are.

By the way... the Sgt. Riker website is incorrect... the photos show the brass sabot from a yankee 10-pounder (2.9"/3"-caliber) Parrott shell. That is absolutely NOT a Read shell's sabot.

Also, Read shell sabots are most frequently wrought-iron, less frequently copper, and only a few made of brass. (Brass was scarce in the Confederacy, and so it was saved for making things which would get used more than once... an artillery shell sabot only gets used once and then it's gone.)
