    need help to id this button

    found this button where i work out in the woods on the frount of it has a eagle with a shield but cant make out the rest on back it says scovill mfg co waterbury ct if you can id thanks for all your help

    Scovill Mfg. Co. is the same backmark I have on many of my CW eagle buttons. It seems that yours is a general issue Union button (unless there is a letter on the shield). If it is nickel-sized, it is a coat button. If smaller than dime-sized, a cuff.

    Your button dates 1859 - 1865 with that back mark... very nice find!

    a plain sheild means general enlisted mans button --general issue-- if a letter is on the sheild its a officers or "branch" button---- differant letters tell what branch "I" for infantry is one ---A for artillery --C for calvary

    Just a point of clearification.. the letter on the shield did not belong to just officers... enlisted wore them too...
