Lang had a contract with the Army on Apr. 14,1857 for 1,050 gross coat buttons and 1,250 gross vest buttons; apparently ther eagle buttons with Lang's b/m are from this contract.

Good Question

1050 & 1250 'Gross' sounds like a-lot but it's it really in button #'s ???

144 in a gross so that would make 151,200 coat buttons and 180,000 vest ones. I have never seen the Lang backmark before so I would say it is rarer than most eagle buttons.

I'd "Guess" it's less common being a 'Mostly ' Late 1850's & 1860 button'. I could be wrong tho ???

I have never seen an Eagle button such as the one you have, but it is one cool looking button. This button looks to be in great shape. How did you come by this button? Best of luck to you with the ID.

Rising sun in the east eagle flying west to usa.

it has been sitting in a box with all other buttons. just had some free time on my hands, decided to organize a display. this one does show resemblance to a similar theme as Engineers button, but with the rising sun in the east this eagle is looking to the west. USA being west of England. the back mark is in the style of old London Gaunt. but i have not found any reference to this one yet. thanks for your input every one.
