I was making my display of relics from old fort site and noticed these two pewter buttons and saw that they look like eagle buttons and one with an I , I believe. I thinking 1830s 20191019_174816.jpg 20191019_174822.jpg 20191019_174832.jpg 20191019_174934.jpg 20191019_174938.jpg 20191019_174948.jpg

According to the button-book by Alphaeus H. Albert, the US Army Infantry PEWTER 1-piece "eagle-I" button was introduced in 1821. The brass 1-piece version starts showing up in the very-late 1820s.

Actually, both of yours had a letter, because ALL of these US Army eagle-with-shield buttons had a letter on the shield until 1854. From that year until 1902, only Officers' buttons had the letter, and Enlisted-men's buttons had a no-letter shield.

Congrat's on the save of those great looking pester Eagle buttons. These will look great displayed, and to think they predate the War of Northern Aggression. Well Done.
