Probably had to do with holding livestock for milking. the cross pieces would be pushed through a link or ring and when crossways, wouldn't come out until it was pushed through and rotated back straight.

Was it found in an area where logging was done in the past?

I was incorrect; got to thinking about it, and it could very well be
a chain used in logging.

Couple of examples I found on the interweb:

I don't know if chokers were always made of cable, so
maybe it was used as a chain choker?

it was a water find in a creek next to a field where a CW camp was. Not saying it is CW related i have found ALOT of chains pieces of chain but never one with these attachments.

Here is another one of them finds that i cannot find nothing about or what it was used for. Found this couple of weeks back and honestly dont know what it was used for.. ive searched but it was kinda general search not knowing what the pieces on the end were used for..any thoughts

thanks

They were used in harnessing a mule or draft horse. Those ends "button" into slits in the leather parts of a harness.

Dangit someone already said log chains. I’ve got one at moms. They come in handy when you want to pull shrubs out, of small trees up

?

Its a cow chain.

Strange, I’ve got some logging chains like those. I’ve even used them while working for a commercial logger, not my own but theirs. I mean it makes sense, run one end through a link, and the other through a stall door or spot that would hold it. The two I have are about 60 years old. There was a video on YouTube not long ago I watched of the same setup I’ve got some guy found on a beach tied to a railroad tie

It’s on right now, haha. I’ll see if I can find the link to the video of these boneheads who spend no telling on renting a mini-ex to lift this chain, and railroad tie out of some sand.
