Civil war era 3 groover or modern muzzle loader bullet?

Found this recently in the woods near where a mid 1800's home once stood. We did find 3 CW buttons there, but no other evidence of a camp or skirmish.

It weighs 25.86 grams. Can't really get the diameter since it's misshapen from being fired.

It is pretty mangled. Any way to determine the kind of base? Best way to tell is to look carefully for little vertical marks in each groove. If none are there under close magnification, it probably is NOT modern.

Considering you also found CW buttons at same location I would say yes i looks like CW 3 ringer

My 9th grade education tells me the bullet 'May' be a .50 -.54 cal rd.
Bottom skirt looks high but what do I know ?

If pressed; yes CW or no CW ; i'd say CW with an 75% certainty.

Thanks for the responses. I'll see if I can get a closer look in the grooves and possibly even spread the base out some to get a better look inside.
