They go back as far as the Revolution, and were widely used especially by British troops during the War of 1812 and of course some are still around even today non dug in collections I have seen. It's a really nice piece. More than likely the history of the spot it came out of will tell the tale.

WOW! That's an incredible find! I've seen plates similar to those found at 1812 sites, however it could also be a militia plate like Gunsil said.

Very nice recovery. It strongly resembles the United States Militia belt plate in the book "Plates and Buckles of the American Military 1795-1874" by Sidney C. Kerksis on page 167.The description is as follows:

Provenance: United States
Type: Cross Belt Plate
Period: Circa 1810
Method of Manufacture: Cast,sand mold
Weight: about 1 1/2 ounces
Material: Brass
Dimensions: About 2.00 X 3.00 inches
51 X 76 millimeters

Rarity: 6
Remarks: This plain oval cross belt plate is typical of the war of 1812 period,

Thank you.. found this in NW AL. That is what has me confused of how in the world it ended up here. I found it in a small CW camp site that has an old home site. I found it in the home site area... wonder if it was used by a CW soldier or a relic of the past home site owners..

Got out for a few hours today and thats all I could handle being 29 degrees. But this was about the 3rd target I dug and my heart went potter patter. I have found several CW relics at this spot and just not familiar with this buckle. I just got home so I will start doing some research but just wanted yalls thoughts also. Thanks as always

Ill agree it's likely a Militia Plate , I found one similar years ago at a Militia Site .

Awesome Find.
