It looks like a general service button issued between 1854 and 1874. So, it is possible that it saw service during the war.

Hate to say this but from what I can see the back looks wrong for CW period. Could you post a better picture of the back?

Shank looks wrong and the letters look wrong. Could possibly be a re enactor's button. Won't know for sure until a clear pic of the back is posted.

Dug's sharp eyesight tells the true tale, again. The button's backmark says "WATERBURY CO'S INC. CONN" -- which dates the button manufacture to 1943-2010. See the complete backmark in the photo below. Prior to that time, the button-maker's name was Waterbury Button Company, and in 1943 the name was changes to Companies (plural). According to the Waterbury Buttons website, the name got changed back to Company (singular) a few years into the 21st-Century. I can't recall the exact year so I said 2010.

In summary... unfortunately, the button is a modernday reproduction of the 1854-74 US Army enlisted-man's uniform "eagle button." It was made for use by civil war battle re-enactors. Americanartifacts33, do you know if there has been a civil war re-enactment at the site where you found that button?

OK. I could not see the backmark. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
