Preserving Leather

Anyone here know the best way to clean and preserve old leather I found a few old pieces of leather with copper rivets and i wanted to preserve them.

Thanks conservtor! I always thought if it came from salt water you could soak it in fresh water for a few weeks, changing the water everyday, and it would get rid of the salt, would that work? btw-the leather came from dirt on land, so i will do those things.
