Hey all,

Dug up this 1878-P Morgan Dollar yesterday. However, it has this black material on it. Seems to be a thin tar-like coating. Any suggestions?

It does look like a tar substance! I think that lighter fluid or nail polish remover might take off tar. Just put a little on a Qtip and gently go over a spot to see if it works.

Good luck! Nice find!

if it's not tar, it looks like residue from a fire. Your morgan was close enough to get a layer of carbon residue, but not so close to melt.
