    Electrolysis: Salt or Baking Soda?

Which do you prefer for cleaning iron?

I have only been using electrolysis for a few months now on iron and have only used baking soda. Well, I've been trying to get a stubborn piece clean with baking soda and it just seems like it's taking forever. Barely a bubble coming off the piece. So, I figured I'd try salt as the electrolyte. Wow! What a difference. Plenty of bubbles coming off the piece now. So, for me it appears as though salt may be the answer. I'll just have to keep a closer eye on the progress.

So, what do you use to clean iron?

TRy a little citric acid. You can get it from a home brewers supply cheap. If you're doing iron you can soak it without electrolosis and it will do a great job. Excellent for saw blades and other real rusty tools.

After using it for tools coat the tool with oil to prevent further rusting.
I know it's here, just need a bigger coil!
